Probauhaus magazine published an interview with 3B Arhitekti about the design of a farewell chapel and cemetery renovation in Šembije. The project emerged from careful listening to the site's character on the Karst edge, emphasising a north-south axis connecting the village to the landscape beyond.
The architects describe: "The architect unites the relationship between landscape and built structure with the relationship between built and detail." Key themes include the use of local stone and respect for traditional craftsmanship — hand-hewn stone applied by local craftsmen, reclaimed timber for interior surfaces.
The project took nearly a decade from conception to completion. Despite initial scepticism, the chapel was nominated for the Plečnik Prize in 2019 and is now valued as a space for collective memory and contemplation.
